Discipline Philosophy
I believe that the foundation of effective school discipline begins with establishing a positive school culture and creating a proactive and positive learning environment by building relationships amongst the staff and students. As such, having systems in place like Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports (PBIS) provides students and staff with clear and consistent expectations. With a positive culture and clear expectations, many discipline issues never have a chance to arise.
However, in the event that students do require disciplinary action, it is important and necessary (although not always possible) to identify the root cause of the behavior or action so as to assist the student with modifying their future behavior or action. This method of discipline requires a more progressive approach rather than aggressive. Most importantly, it requires varied levels of interventions and consequences that need to be consistent, yet fluid for the ever changing circumstances that life might bring (i.e. COVID-19).
