Student Voice Survey Data
Every year in my class since 2014-15, I administer my own version of the Student Voice Survey to all of my students to help me analyze my areas of strengths and weakness as a teacher, but I also allow a space for additional comments. I have found this practice to be most effective and plan to continue to utilize it at an administrative level in order to improve my practice based on the needs of the community. The following are direct quotes from students taken from the survey. Although these are not from colleagues, these are from anonymous students who have felt compelled to utilize their voice in the comments section:
"Thanks for teaching us this year and breaking us out of our shells! I really enjoyed all of the journals, even if I was annoyed with them at the time. And the Christmas party where we all wrote cards was awesome! I just think I had a hard time learning and being focused. But I guess that is the insignificant stuff in the long run anyways. Sometimes, the life lessons are way more important, so I think I learned what I needed to :)"
"I really feel like Mrs. Pierce truly cares about me and wants me to succeed."
"Ms. Pierce has been a great teacher for me this year as I've developed more as a person and learned to grow into myself as both a more confident and mature individual. I thank her for her service."
"Mrs. P helped me get my life together and realize it's okay to not have it together sometimes. Enjoy your summer!"
"I like how we worked hard everyday, especially when we got to the synthesis essay and writing unit."
"Honestly, English is the only class I enjoy all the time and I love that you don't hover over me as I work. "
"People talk to me about Laura Pierce as if she is one of the worst teachers in this school. 'She doesn't teach very well, but she is such an amazing person.' It frustrates me to hear this because people don't understand how much time and effort she puts into teaching us. She does a wonderful job at explaining subjects and ideas that I don't clearly understand. She gives us simple work that is clearly straightforward and easy to understand. Laura Pierce is the best teachers this school has under its belt. Teaching skills is only half of what is needed to be a teacher and she has that all down. Being able to understand the students and the way they are is the other half of teaching. Laura Pierce knows when something is bothering me and she helps me with it. I'm not the only one either. She helps and talks to lots of students. She very obviously shows the right traits and skills to be a wonderful teacher. She uses all of these skills very effectively. Laura Pierce is the best teacher here no doubt. She's not only the best teacher in the teaching regards, she's a great mentor. Although this is all opinion, I feel she deserves teacher of the year. Every year."
"Throughout this year I have had ups and downs. This class helped me realize the slacking is not an option, staying on top of things is key to success. Thank you as a teacher for never giving up on me even when I was at my breaking points."
"The class this year was very challenging, which in my opinion is a very good thing. We as students HAD to learn to manage our time management skills and we had to listen to everything to make sure we understood how to do our assignment. This class was by far one of my most favorite classes."
"There were times this year that I regretted taking this class, but in the long run it is the only class that really challenged me and kept me on my toes. At times it would stress me out, because your grade can go from an A to a F quickly if you do not put effort into your work. I was such a slacker last year and i was always stressing out about my grades, but this year (partly because of this class) I have stayed on top of my grades. I HATED NoRedInk, but it has taught me soooo much this year. Thank you Mrs. Pierce for being so tech savvy and making sure I always had something to do in your class. I am ALWAYS bored in all my other classes, but I was never bored in your class. You tried your best to make learning easy and semi- interesting. I might actually miss your class next year."
"I enjoyed the usage of Google Classroom this year as an alternative to paper assignments. It was much more convenient for me as a student, and I know it was more convenient for you as a teacher (plus, it's good for the environment!). However, it was a very new concept to me to just jump into, especially near the beginning of the year. I didn't feel secure in using it for about one forth to one half of the year. Hopefully this will be less of a problem next year because the sophomores next year will have already been using classroom in previous classes! Additionally, I would just like to say that I have surprisingly enjoyed this class and having you as my teacher and being in here with my classmates/friends. This was by far my most comfortable class this year, despite the newness of classroom. Having the lights off provided a comforting atmosphere, and I also felt reassured that I had multiple opportunities to fix assignments if I needed to. Thank you for everything and being my favorite teacher!"
"Mrs. Pierce is a great teacher and takes time to understand her students and make sure they are living up to their full potential."
"My teacher does an excellent job in helping students and making learning more enjoyable for all types of learners. Group work is amazing and so is individual. Its great to learn each day with the teaching my teacher exhibits on a daily basis. We have essays, visual projects(animations) and even vocal answers being said, it is truly an awesome experience. "
"I have enjoyed this year with Mrs Pierce:)"
"My teacher is a really good teacher and helps us with anything we need if it has to do with school or problems outside of school."
"Very understanding. Good person to come talk to when you need to talk to someone."
"My teacher really did prepare me for next year."
"I enjoyed taking this class."
"I hope you get an administration job, even though I’m gonna miss you!"
"I’m usually really good at English and I think it is a mixture of both me not paying attention and most of the assignments being on google classroom. Either way whether you’re a good teacher or not, I personally am grateful to have a teacher who cares about the mental and physical health of her students above the work. Not everyone is like that and it’s so important especially in public schools."
"I’m going to miss you so much next year:( we didn’t start off on the right foot but you’ve helped me become more mature and focus on what really matters instead of grades and for that I’m forever grateful. I love you:)"
"Genuinely wants to see our success and help us to achieve our goals."
"It is really, truly valuable to have a teacher that cares to be more than just a teacher. Of course, learning isn’t always the “fun” thing to do, but when you feel safe and comfortable, it’s a lot easier."
"You are a good teacher and truly care about every single student! Thanks you a good year!!"
"You are honestly one of the best teachers I have had in high school so far. It is obvious you care about your students and other people and that is rare to see in teachers most of the time. I am thankful for what I have learned this year and I am thankful for the experience you gave me in this classroom. "
"Your such a great teacher and honestly I don’t know where I would be without you today you saved me when times got rough."
"You are my favorite teacher and are doing a great job. You have helped me with my writing and understanding topics."
"So glad I had the opportunity to be in this class this year. I've learned lots and I have gained such an awesome relationship with my teacher!"
"Sorry I didn't get to do this earlier, these past few weeks have been an absolute hell for me. Though I'm glad to have gotten it done. No matter what anyone else thinks, I believe you're an amazing teacher that does her absolute best to make sure we all feel like we belong and understand what we need to do during class. This is supposed to be anonymous, but I hope you know who this is, cause I'm obviously your favorite student. Thanks for always being a good teacher and an even better person Mrs. Pierce!"
